$61 million in unclaimed cash

IRS officials said yesterday that more than 200,000 New York City residents who aren’t required to file taxes are missing out on their economic stimulus checks. “Normally, they don’t have to file because their income is too low” said Kevin McKeon, an IRS spokesman.

“We’re in a push to alert them that if they haven’t filed yet, they should so we can get them a stimulus check by the end of the year.”

He said those eligible can file for free online at www.irs.gov until Oct. 15. More than $61 million in federal money that should go to needy New Yorkers is sitting around unclaimed.
